What We Can't Take

Almost everything in a house, a yard, a garage or a job site goes on the truck. One category does not, and it is worth knowing which before the crew turns up.

The short version

One Rule, and It Is Not Ours

No hauler in Florida may put household hazardous waste in a general load. It is not a policy any company gets to set, and a hauler who agrees to take your paint tins is telling you something about how the rest of your load will be handled.

The practical effect is small. Set the hazardous items aside before the crew arrives, and everything else on the property still goes in one visit.

  • Everything else goes. Furniture, appliances, yard waste, construction debris, whole-property clearances.
  • The exception is household hazardous waste, and it is a legal one rather than a preference.
  • Pinellas County takes all of it free from residents at two drop-off sites.
  • Tell us at the quote if you are unsure. The crew will say plainly what can ride and what cannot.

Items We Can't Haul Away

Almost everything in a house, a yard, a garage or a job site goes on the truck. Household hazardous waste stays off it, and no hauler in Florida may put these 8 categories in a general load. Knowing the list before the crew arrives saves everyone a wasted trip.

  • Paint, solvents and thinners

Latex paint, oil paint, wood stain, varnish, turpentine and paint stripper, full cans or part used.

  • Motor oil, fuel and antifreeze

Engine oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, brake fluid and coolant, plus the containers they came in.

  • Pesticides and pool chemicals

Weed killer, insect spray, liquid fertilizer, chlorine tablets, muriatic acid and pool shock.

  • Propane tanks and gas cylinders

Grill tanks, camping canisters, oxygen bottles and helium bottles. Empty tanks count too.

  • Car and marine batteries

Lead-acid batteries of any size. Most auto parts stores take these back at the counter for free.

  • Asbestos and lead paint waste

Old floor tile, pipe wrap and siding on pre-1980 buildings need a certified asbestos abatement contractor first.

  • Medical and biohazard waste

Sharps, needles, prescription medicine and anything a body fluid has touched.

  • Ammunition and fireworks

Live rounds, road flares, explosives and marine signal kits. These go to the sheriff, not to us.

Where these go instead, free for Pinellas residents

Pinellas County runs 2 free drop-off sites for residents. The Household Hazardous Waste Center at 2855 109th Ave N in St. Petersburg opens on weekdays, and HHW North at 29582 US 19 N in Clearwater opens on selected Saturdays. Both scan a government-issued ID to confirm you live in the county. Check current days and hours with Pinellas County Household Hazardous Waste Collection before you drive over.
